G&D Chillers alternative: plug-in MCED glycol chillers
G&D Chillers, in Junction City, Oregon, builds commercial glycol chillers from 1.5 HP up to 300 HP for production breweries and wineries, sold by quote. MCED glycol chillers, made in Montreal and sold by Bräu Supply, start much smaller: plug-in chillers from 2,750 BTU/hr for homebrew up to 12,900 BTU/hr for a 10 BBL cellar, with published prices and built-in pumps.

What G&D does well
G&D has built brewery chillers since 1993. Its range goes far beyond ours, to multi-compressor and modular systems for large breweries, built for outdoor installation and ETL approved for the US and Canada. Piping design and installation support come with every chiller. If you run 15 BBL fermenters and up, with three-phase power and a refrigeration contractor, G&D is built for that job.
Where an MCED chiller fits better
- Sizes for homebrew, pilot and small breweries. G&D’s smallest chiller makes about 10,700 BTU/h and weighs 650 lb. MCED starts at 2,750 BTU/hr, with 120V models up to 6,180 BTU/hr for 1 to 7 BBL.
- Plug in and brew. Every MCED model up to the BEF-150 plugs into an outlet, can sit indoors next to the fermenters and needs no refrigeration contractor to start up.
- A price you can see. Prices are on the page, payment is at checkout and most chillers ship within a week. G&D sells by quote with a 50% deposit.
- Pumps and monitoring included. Each chiller comes with a pump in the bath, and the BEF-04, -05 and -075 have Chiller Watch remote monitoring built in.
- Canada and the US. Canadian brewers pay in Canadian dollars with no border. In the US, the price you see is delivered with tariffs and duties paid.
Which should you buy?
Choose G&D for a production brewery that needs more than about 15,000 BTU/hr, an outdoor chiller, or a system that grows with added compressors.
Choose MCED for homebrew, pilot systems and breweries up to about 10 BBL: plug-in power, indoor install, published prices and fast delivery. For bigger loads, ask us about the industrial BEF-300 and BEF-500. The sizing calculator picks a size from your tank list.
FAQ
Does G&D make a homebrew glycol chiller?
No. Its smallest model, the GD-1.5H Nano Chill, is a 1.5 HP, 230V commercial unit that weighs 650 lb in operation. For homebrew, the MCED BEF-02 runs one fermenter from a standard 120V outlet, and the BEF-04 runs up to four.
How much does a G&D chiller cost?
G&D doesn’t publish prices; every model is quote only. MCED chiller prices are listed on our glycol chillers page.
Do I need an electrician or refrigeration technician?
No refrigeration technician for MCED chillers up to the BEF-150: they plug in, into a 120V outlet up to the BEF-075 or a 220V NEMA 6-20 outlet for the BEF-100 and -150. MCED’s manual asks for a dedicated, GFCI-protected circuit; if you don’t have one, an electrician can add it. G&D units are wired to a dedicated 230V or three-phase circuit, and its warranty terms call for start-up by a licensed refrigeration technician on stationary units.
What size chiller do I need?
Add up the load of each tank on your busiest day: fermenting, cold crashing or holding cold. Our sizing calculator uses MCED’s method and picks the smallest chiller that covers it.
