3-vessel HERMS brewing, answered.
What is a 3-vessel brewing system?+
A 3-vessel system gives each job its own vessel: a hot liquor tank (HLT) heats the strike and sparge water, a mash tun holds the grain, and a boil kettle boils the wort. Our HERMS is a 3-vessel system with a stainless HERMS coil in the hot liquor tank, so the same hot water that sparges also holds your mash temperature.
HERMS or a single-vessel system: which should I choose?+
A single-vessel system like the Unibräu heats, mashes, sparges and boils in one kettle with a grain basket: less floor space and less cleanup. A 3-vessel HERMS keeps each step in its own vessel: recirculating mashes through the HERMS coil, sparge water straight from the hot liquor tank, and no compromise on volume in any one vessel. We compare all three ways to brew in HERMS vs RIMS vs single vessel. Still deciding? Compare our systems or walk through each brew day in the Brew Day Planner.
What sizes does the HERMS come in?+
10, 15, 20, 30 and 50 gallons. The 10G suits 5-gallon batches, the 15G 5- to 10-gallon batches and is the first size with the hinged grain door, and the 50G handles pilot batches of about 1 BBL. See the HERMS Electric Brewery for what each size includes.
What power does a HERMS need?+
Every size runs on one 240V / 30A circuit, with up to 6 kW total output from a single controller. Besides power, you supply a water hookup, a way to chill the wort (our counterflow chiller is an add-on, or use your own), a fermenter and the grain. New to 240V? Our electric brewing guide explains the circuit.
Is a wort chiller included?+
No. The counterflow chiller and Essentials Kit are an add-on: pick them on the HERMS product page and they ship with your system, taking wort from the boil kettle to your fermenter at pitching temperature. Already have a chiller? The kettle outlet is standard 1.5" tri-clamp.
Do I need a brew table?+
It helps. The HERMS Brew Table holds all three vessels at a comfortable working height.
