Vessel only, or vessel + Heat Exchange Kit?
Vessel only is the bare welded HLT — for brewers replacing or expanding a hot side who already own the plumbing and coil. Heat Exchange Kit adds the HERMS coil + hardware to make it HERMS-ready out of the box.
Six steps. Strike water through sparge.
The HLT carries two roles across a HERMS brew day: hot water reservoir for strike + sparge, and heat exchanger for the mash recirculation loop. The bottom drain handles all liquid transfer; the HERMS coil mount accepts a serviceable, replaceable coil for mash temperature control.
Fill — charge with brewing water
Fill through the lid TC port (or a hose through the top). Etched internal markings let you target volume to within a half-gallon by eye.
Heat — ULWD element brings strike
1.5" TC element port fits any standard tri-clamp ULWD element. Heat to your strike temperature for the grain bill, then hold.
Strike — dose the mash tun
Drain measured strike water through the bottom TC drain into the mash tun. Gravity-feed if the HLT is elevated, or pump if it sits on the floor.
Step mash — HERMS heat exchange
Mash wort pumps from the mash tun into the submerged HERMS coil, returns to the mash tun at HLT temperature. The HLT element holds water temperature; the coil holds the mash temperature through programmed steps.
Sparge — feed the mash tun
Slow draw through the bottom drain into the mash tun for fly sparge. Volume tracks down the etched markings as you go.
CIP — spray + drain
Bottom drain pulls the final rinse out cleanly. Spray ball through the lid TC port if you want closed-loop CIP — same chemistry as the mash tun and boil kettle.
HERMS-ready when configured.
Heat Exchange Kit adds the HERMS coil + plumbing hardware. Compression-to-tri-clamp coil mount means the coil is serviceable and replaceable — no permanent welds inside the vessel. Vessel only is for brewers replacing an existing HLT and bringing their own coil + hardware.

Etched internal volume markings Stamped right into the interior wall. Read strike + sparge volumes by eye.
*Heat Exchange Kit bundles a 5,500W (240V) ULWD element. 50G vessel is dual-element capable; current HERMS controller is single-element, so the kit ships with one element. Power cord ships with the HERMS controller, not with the element. Pricing assumes vessel-only build; Heat Exchange Kit priced separately ($599 small coil for 10G/15G/20G · $639 large coil for 30G/50G).

Same architecture, same fittings, same drain. Pair the HLT with the matching Mash Tun + Boil Kettle for a full HERMS hot side — clamps and gaskets carry across every size.
About the DrainPro HLT.
Do I really need a separate HLT?+
For full HERMS or RIMS architectures, yes — the HLT both holds your strike + sparge water and acts as the heat exchanger for mash temperature control via the submerged coil. For single-vessel or BIAB workflows, the HLT is optional. Brewers running step mashes or controlled fermentation profiles benefit most from the dedicated heat exchanger.
Which size should I buy?+
Match the HLT size to your mash tun — a 20G mash tun pairs with a 20G HLT, etc. Sparge water volume runs roughly equal to mash volume, with headroom for strike. 10G for 5-gal batches, 15G for 7–8 gal, 20G for 10-gal, 30G for double-batch days, 50G for ~1 BBL pilot.
Why a serviceable HERMS coil mount?+
Most HLTs in the market ship with the HERMS coil permanently welded inside — when it fouls, scales, or fails, the entire vessel is dead. The DrainPro HLT uses a compression-to-tri-clamp coil mount: the coil bolts in via a compression-to-TC adapter, with no permanent welds. Pull it out for inspection or cleaning, swap it for a different coil geometry, or replace it years down the line — the vessel itself outlives the coil.
How does the HERMS coil mount work?+
The HLT ships with a bulkhead port sized for a compression-to-tri-clamp adapter. The HERMS coil bolts in through that adapter — no permanent welds inside the vessel, no proprietary fittings. The coil is fully serviceable: pull it out for cleaning or replace it without affecting the vessel itself. Coil + adapter included in the Heat Exchange Kit.
What's the difference between Vessel only and Heat Exchange Kit?+
Vessel only is the bare welded HLT with every TC port welded in — for brewers replacing an existing HLT who own a HERMS coil, element, and plumbing already. Heat Exchange Kit adds everything to run a HERMS brewhouse: size-matched HERMS coil (small for 10G/15G/20G, large for 30G/50G), 2× compression-to-TC coil adapters, 5,500W ULWD brewing element, 4× 1.5" TC butterfly valves, 2× press-in dip tubes, 2× TC blank caps, and 7× TC clamps + gaskets.
Is the element included?+
Yes — in the Heat Exchange Kit. The kit ships with a matched 5,500W ULWD brewing element, sized for 240V. Vessel only buyers should source their own TC element. Power cord ships with the HERMS controller, not with the element.
What ships, and when?+
Ships from our Vancouver, BC workshop. Most orders out in 5–10 days, free continental US shipping. 10G, 15G and 20G ship via standard courier; 30G and 50G ship LTL freight (palletized, with tracking and a delivery appointment).
What's the warranty?+
2-year warranty on every weld and TC port, and the Heat Exchange Kit valves and HERMS coil (when bundled). Element (Heat Exchange Kit): 2 years against defects. Not covered: dry-firing (running the element without liquid covering it), and heat or melt damage at the twist-lock plug from a loose or improper connection — a proper, fully seated connection has to be maintained. Gaskets, clamps and O-rings are consumables; replacements are in stock and cheap. Lifetime parts support on everything we build — serviced, not replaced.
